PERFORMANCE
Nissan Altima

It only makes sense that you’d look under the hood of any prospective car you’re considering. After all, you’ll want to be sure it has the necessary power to take you reliably from Point A to Point B—and beyond.

Powertrains Plus

Both sedans provide two engines to choose from that ensure the efficient performance you require. Their standard engines generate over 180 horsepower and virtually the same amount of torque: 182 lb-ft in the Altima and 181 lb-ft in the Sonata.

Also, they both offer available turbo engines to dial up the excitement with even more power packed under the hood.

Where they diverge is in their drivetrains and how they move that power from the engine to the wheels. The Sonata provides an 8-speed automatic transmission for smooth shift changes. Meanwhile, the Altima has an Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission) that has wide ratio coverage for a more efficient drive.

Smooth, Sleek, & Controlled Performance

The 2023 Nissan Altima and the Hyundai Sonata come standard with Front-Wheel Drive for smooth, fuel-minded drives. However, only the Altima offers an available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system.

AWD can adjust to changes on the road faster than you can blink. That way, you can stay in control even when road conditions change or when you encounter unfavorable weather. Without this feature in the Sonata, you may not feel as confident driving in inclement weather or slick road conditions.

INTERIOR
Nissan Altima

Still, you’ll spend most of your time within the cabin of your sedan, not on the engine block. As such, you’ll want to be sure that your vehicle’s interior has the comforts and amenities you desire—and require—when you’re behind the wheel.

Comfort & Style for Miles

The Altima and the Sonata are a bit more evenly matched when it comes to comfort and convenience. You’ll find standard cloth seating, 6-way adjustable front seats, and available heated front seats in both models.

Each sedan has a multi-media touchscreen. The Sonata’s available screen is 10.25 inches, which is impressive; however, it pales in comparison to the available 12.3-inch touchscreen in the Altima. Plus, the 5-inch multi-function information display in the Altima will be easier to view critical driving metrics than the 3.5-inch instrument cluster in the Sonata.

Interior Dimensions

As larger cars, these models offer expansive passenger space in the cabin. Both sedans feature over 100 cubic feet of passenger volume to accommodate five riders.

However, it should be noted the space is a bit lopsided in the Sonata with plenty of front legroom but only 34.8 inches of rear legroom. Space is more evenly distributed in the Altima, which also offers a great deal of legroom up front along with 35.2 inches of legroom in the rear row.

SAFETY
Nissan Altima

Of course, whether you’re riding solo or have other passengers along, the safety of everyone on board is paramount. When you get behind the wheel, you’ll want to be confident that you’re well protected on those ever-changing roads.

Standard Driver-Assistance Features

Both the Altima and the Sonata come standardly equipped with robust driver-assistance suites: Nissan Safety Shield® 360 in the Altima and SmartSense in the Sonata. They include several similar systems, including brand-specific versions of the following:

  • Intelligent Forward Collision Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
  • Blind Spot Warning with Rear Cross Traffic Aler
  • High Beam Assist

Both models also come standard with Intelligent Driver Alertness, which monitors your driving patterns and alerts you if the system senses that you may be drowsy or distracted. That way, you can pull over to take a break, ensuring your safety as well as that of others on the road.

Next-Level Safety

However, the Altima offers a unique feature:available Traffic Sign Recognition. This feature can keep you updated on the posted speed limit as well as detected stop signs as you drive. Without a comparable feature in the Sonata, you may miss out on an essential piece of driving information.
