The IIHS is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This organization crash-tests vehicles to determine how safe they are.
The IIHS evaluates two kinds of safety: crashworthiness and crash avoidance/mitigation. Cars that do particularly well in both these tests earn 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK and 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards.
The 2021 Nissan Sentra earned the IIHS 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. That means it scored Good on various crashworthiness tests and Advanced or Superior on crash prevention tests. It also scored a Good on headlight standards.
The Rogue received the highest score possible on nearly every test.
NHTSA Safety Rating
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also does its own set of crash tests to determine a vehicle’s safety rating.
The NHTSA performs three types of tests: frontal collisions, side crashes, and even a rollover test. The vehicles then are scored from one to five stars on each test—five being best—then given an overall score out of five stars.
