When to Replace Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are commonly overlooked, but they’re one of the most important accessories on your vehicle. When you encounter a torrential downpour, a dusting of flurries, or a wintry mix, your windshield wipers aid your vision on the road to keep you safe.

Windshield wipers can often get neglected, only being replaced when they’re well past their time. At Stateline Nissan, we understand how important this accessory is to your visibility and safety, which is why we’re here to provide some insight into when to replace windshield wipers.

How Long Do Windshield Wipers Last?

Depending on driving conditions, windshield wiper blades are designed to last six months to a year. Time, use, and weather conditions can all play a role in the wear and tear of your windshield wiper blades. Snow, rain, sunlight, heat, and cold can all cause your windshield wipers to deteriorate faster, and even if your area has a mild climate, environmental pollutants can degrade the rubber on the blades over time.

How to Check Your Windshield Wiper Blades

At the very least, your windshield wiper blades should be inspected every six months, though those who live in harsh climates should make it a habit to check them every few months.

To begin, pick up each wiper and inspect the surface that comes in contact with the windshield. Bend the blades back and forth to see if there are any splits in the blade which could affect their ability to clear your windshield and cause them to wear faster. Run your finger along the edge of the blade to check for any cuts, gaps, or nicks, and check that they fit snuggly against the windshield without lifting in any area. Overall, your windshield wiper blades should look clean, smooth, and free of any cracks, splits, or frays.

Other Indicators of Wear to Your Windshield Wiper Blades

Aside from a visual inspection of your windshield wiper blades, other subtle indicators demonstrate that they need to be replaced.

If your windshield wiper blades skip across the windshield or squeak, that’s a clear sign that they’re worn or not making full contact with the glass surface. Be sure to try your windshield wipers at different speeds, because you may notice unusual noises at a higher or lower speed.

Another obvious sign that your wiper blades should be replaced is how well they work. Your windshield wipers should clear the water effectively in their entire arc, so if they leave large areas of moisture, streaks, or other gaps, they should be replaced as soon as possible. Even small areas of moisture could be enough to obscure your visibility in severe weather.

If it comes time to replace your windshield wiper blades, remember that they are specific to your make and model. Choosing windshield wiper blades that are too long, too short, or otherwise ill-fitted to your vehicle, won’t work properly, which could damage your windshield or obstruct your vision.
