How Often Does Your Oil Filter Need to Be Replaced?

Every part of your engine plays a significant role in keeping your car running. Oil helps all the parts stay in working condition. The oil filter acts as the first line of defense and maintains the quality of your oil. So, when does that part need to get looked at?

To help you stay up on your regular maintenance, Stateline Nissan looks at how often you should have your oil filter replaced.

How Often Should You Get Your Oil Filter Replaced?

Oil FilterLike a lot of service questions, there’s a few schools of thought on when you’ll need to get your oil filter replaced. One popular theory is that it should be changed every time you get an oil change. Another is to go get it replaced if your Check Engine light comes on.

The best way to decide when to schedule an appointment for a new oil filter is by checking your owner’s manual. It should include a maintenance schedule that will give you a mileage estimate of how frequently your vehicle should get new filters.

How you drive and where you drive can also affect your filter’s lifespan. If you regularly drive in more extreme weather, you may have to get a new filter sooner. Stop-and-go driving in an area where it’s very hot all year can cause lots of systems on your car to require maintenance before someone who drives slowly or less frequently in a colder part of the country.

What Does an Oil Filter Do?

Oil FilterMotor oil is a very important part of maintaining a healthy engine. Your car has lots of moving parts that are hard at work under the hood. Machinery can create a lot of heat. Without proper lubrication, that can cause friction and lead to breakdowns.

Oil runs through your engine and keeps the parts cool and lubricated, so they can keep working. The filter helps keep the oil clean. Its job is to strain the oil before it enters your engine and catch any rocks, debris, sludge, or other harmful contaminants that may have been kicked up into the oil.

When a filter gets clogged, it can result in no oil being able to reach the engine. Since this can cause damage, most engines and engine oil filters have a built-in bypass. This will send dirty oil to the engine, so it at least has some lubrication.

Since both contaminated oil and no oil in your engine can cause problems, it’s important to have this critical part replaced by a service technician when it’s necessary.
